Water, Sand, Salt, Rust  and Fungus Damage

All camcorders and electronic equipment is susceptible to damage at the beach or in industrial and other harsh environments due to moisture, sand, salt, water and fungus.

Note: After a beach shoot, when you try to brush or blow inside the camera to get sand or salt out, some of the grains might be blown farther into the camera, causing or aggravating malfunctions.

Water Damage

Exposure to water does not necessarily mean that camera is destroyed; we might be able to save the camera. Especially important is whether or not your equipment was operating  at the time and the degree of water damage. In such situations, our FREE repair estimate is an important option for you.

Sand Damage

Sand can cause devastating effects on a camera.  Sand gets deep inside and throughout the systems --- from the tape deck to the outer parts of the lens.  When sand gets inside, it seriously affects moving parts. This is usually signaled by grinding, grating and cranking in the manual and auto controls, lens and other mechanical parts. If the sand has not caused permanent damage, tedious work and time is required to clean and restore the unit.

Salt Damage

If you have sand contamination in your camera, it may be likely that there are also salt grains inside the camera. Unfortunately salt can cause all of the damage mentioned earlier, and more. You can operate the camera with a sand incursion and live with annoying grinding sounds and malfunctions. However salt saturation is different. It will lead to rust, corrosion, oxidation, decomposition and decay of electronics parts and printed boards. Acting as a conductor, salt will sometimes short the circuits and cause many types of errors.

Corosion or Rust Damage

Corosion and rust can form in equipment due to moisture, chemicals, acid, or even fumes. Rust and corosion can even be cause by improper storage of the camera. Storage of your equipment should always be in clean, dry areas.

Repair Solutions

Sand, salt, fungus, rust and corosion must be removed. We disassemble the camera and clean its modules individually using compressed air, electronic or ultrasonic cleaners. Under high-power magnification, each gear is examined, cleaned, lubricated and reassembled before adjusting the unit to its factory settings

Fungus or Mold Damage on Lenses

l

Although fungus contamination happens most often in warm tropical environments, it can occur under any humid and warm conditions. Fungus is most noticeable in the lens, where it may cause the image to look hazy. Fine strands may be noticeable cris-crossing lens elements. Eventually, fungus strands permeate spaces and surfaces within and between the lens assembly. If it’s been growing for awhile, heavier spots develop at the junctions of the strands. The fungus etches into the lens coating and eventually into the glass as well.

Fungus Repair

If the fungus contamination is not too advanced, it can be cleaned out of the body and optics. Our technicians have successfully removed fungus without damaging the lens; however success cannot be guaranteed.  Sometimes the lens must be stripped and the optical elements removed and cleaned on both sides. The inside of the barrels and lens mounts must be irritated and cleaned. Prior to reassembly, the unit must be properly lubricated. This is especially important for equipment that is re-exposed to moisture, hot weather and fungus --- all of which tend to break down lubricants,

We recommend that you do not try to clean a intermal parts of a lens yourself. Use of window cleaner or liquid detergents often leave permanent spots on the lens surface.
